This machine allows us to take 3-dimensional scans of the back and front of your eyes rather like an MRI scanner does for the rest of your body.

What are the benefits?

We can look beneath the retinal surface and detect:

Changes too small to be seen by other methods.
Eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Macular Degenerations and Diabetic Retinopathy may be detected, and treatment started at a much earlier stage helping to preserve your sight. We can keep a permanent record so small changes can be regularly monitored.
Should referral be required we can include photographs and diagnostic levels of detail. For the first time you can see and understand the changes taking place.

Who should have OCT?

Everyone who wants the best available eye care but particularly:

Those over the age of 40.
Those with a family history of eye problems.
Diabetics and smokers.
Anyone with health problems or taking medication that may affect the eyes.
Anyone who has had an abnormality detected using any other method.
Anyone with particular concerns regarding their vision or eye health.
Anyone with Macular Degeneration or Glaucoma.

Corneal Topography involves mapping the shape of the surface of the eye.

We are able to accurately map and assess the corneal surface with our Medmont E300 Corneal Topographer. This is a non-invasive technique (no touching the eye) that takes only a few seconds and is completely painless.

This allows us to diagnose and monitor many corneal conditions such as Keratoconus and corneal dystrophies as well as to follow patients undergoing CRT.

Corneal topography can also assess the changes achieved with Laser Vision Correction.

One of the ways used by optometrists to accurately diagnose dry eye is to use a Keratograph. This instrument is able to analyse 4 key dry eye factors:

Redness / Irritation

Display of thin blood vessels in the conjunctiva:

Only the thin blood vessels of the conjunctiva are detected and evaluated.

Display in red-free light:

Under the green spectrum of visible light, blood vessels are richer in contrast and more visible.

Lipid Layer

Evaluation of the lipid layer thickness:

The colour and structure of the lipid layer is visible and can be recorded. This shows the lipid layer thickness, which correlates with tear film evaporation and dry eye symptoms. If the lipid layer is too thin or absent, the tear evaporation rate and the tear film instability increase.

Evaluation of the tear film break-up time:

The tear film break-up time measurement with the Keratograph 5M is touch-free and fully automatic. The new infrared illumination is invisible to the human eye and produces no glare during the examination and no reflex tearing. The TF-Scan maps the tear film break up time and is a great tool for follow-ups and patient consultation.

Meibomian Gland Infra-red Imaging

3-D display of the meibomian glands

There are different viewing options, such as, the 3-D display, various section planes and the marketing of the individual area of examination to easily evaluate the meibomian glands and the morphological changes in the upper and lower eyelids.

More accurate spectacle measurements

As prescription lenses move further into the digital era so does the equipment we use in store to take the measurements for ordering them. Gone are the days of using a felt tip pen to stab a guess at the position of the center of the patient’s pupil while they wear the glasses.

Our lenses are produced using highly technical precision equipment and our measurements must match this to ensure optimal vision for each of our patients.

The V-Scope clips to an iPad and uses the camera to take digital images which allow it to calculate the required measurements.

Our standard multi-focal lenses now take into consideration the height of the pupil in the frame, the wrap of the frame, the distance from the front of the pupil to the back of the lens and the angle that the frame sits of the face. The V-scope is able to calculate each of these measurements from just a couple of photos!
